Genevieve (DuBois) and Greg Sutton

Active in the mining industry and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Genevieve (DuBois) and Greg Sutton first met in 2007. They knew each other for a long time before they became a couple.

“We were both on campus often for mining department activities as alumni – mucking competitions, senior design project judging and grading, and department-sponsored conferences,” she says. “Mucking competitions were something we both loved to participate in, judge and help with.”

Genevieve, a founding member of S&T’s Haunted Mine, and Greg frequently return to campus for that annual event.

Greg earned a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering in 1988 and an MBA in 2018. Genevieve earned bachelor’s degrees in metallurgical engineering and mining engineering in 1998 and 2001, respectively. The couple married in December 2014. The wedding happened in the university’s Experimental Mine, a place that felt like they were “coming home.”

“This was where we got our start as engineers and professionals,” says Genevieve. “The mining department and Experimental Mine staff were very accommodating for our big day. Dr. Worsey and Dewayne Phelps had a special little surprise when we were pronounced ‘husband and wife’.”

Today Greg works as a project manager at Cementation USA. Genevieve works as a senior environmental engineer in The Doe Run Company’s remediation group.

Their relationship advice?

“Find someone who shares at least one of your passions,” says Genevieve. “And even better if you can find someone who you can build a house with!”

“Laugh lots and judge slowly,” adds Greg.
